Blue Slip Inspections

While not every vehicle requires a Blue Slip, understanding its requirements and how they differ from Pink Slips and Green Slips is crucial for getting your car registered in New South Wales. A Blue Slip can also be an important step when organizing car insurance.
This guide aims to help you navigate the NSW Blue Slip process, including when you might need one, how to obtain it, what to expect during the safety inspection, how much it costs, and how long it lasts.
What is a Blue Slip?
A Blue Slip is an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) report in NSW that verifies an unregistered vehicle is safe and meets design and identity standards.
If you have an unregistered light vehicle, you will need a Blue Slip safety inspection before it can be registered in NSW. Light vehicles are defined by the NSW Government as motor vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of 4.5 tonnes or less, and trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less.
You typically need a Blue Slip if:
- Your vehicle registration has expired for more than three months.
- Your vehicle has been brought into NSW from another state or territory.
- Your vehicle has no number plates.
- Your vehicle is a write-off approved for re-registration.
You might also need a Blue Slip if:
- There have been significant changes to your vehicle registration records, such as a new engine installation.
- You need to clear defect notices.
There are several types of 'slips' in NSW, which can be confusing. A Blue Slip is different from a Green Slip (CTP insurance), mandatory for all registered vehicles in NSW, and a Pink Slip, which verifies that vehicles older than five years are roadworthy.
Even with a Blue Slip, you’ll still need a Green Slip to complete your vehicle registration in NSW.
What Happens During a Blue Slip Inspection?
To get a Blue Slip, your vehicle must be inspected at an authorised inspection station. Authorised stations display an AIS (Authorised Inspection Scheme) sign at their premises, listing the types of safety checks they perform.
During the Blue Slip inspection, your examiner will ensure your vehicle is safe and meets NSW design and identity standards. The inspection includes checks of your car’s tyres, lights, fluids, suspension, seatbelts, and brakes. The Blue Slip inspection also involves an identity check to ensure the vehicle or its parts are not stolen.
If your vehicle passes the Blue Slip safety inspection, the report will be sent electronically to Transport for NSW. You must also bring the original hard copy of your Blue Slip report when you register your vehicle at a Service NSW Centre.
If your vehicle fails the inspection, you’ll need to make the necessary repairs before completing your registration. If repairs are completed within 14 days and the vehicle is reassessed at the same AIS station, no extra inspection fees apply. However, if repairs take longer than 14 days, another inspection fee is usually required.
